What is your favourite personal gadget?
That would have to be my iPhone. I still have the iPhone 5 because it is the right size for me, and perfectly meets my needs. The nicest thing for me about it is that Apple have managed to create a beautifully designed device, which is both a productivity tool for work and a personal tool that is useful for fitness, health, news and entertainment.
Do you have a favourite piece of personal software?
Probably Spotify, which I use a lot to listen to music.
What was the first piece of technology you got really excited about?
The Commodore Vic 20. That was one of the first personal computers in the 1980s with a huge 20Kb of memory (Surpassed by the Commodore 64 soon after with a massive 64 Kbytes of memory)! A mate and I wrote our own space invader style games… it was so cool at the time. I had a BMX bike at the same time and that was also amazing, if that counts as technology?
What device improves your life most at work?
In our office we have a big screen TV which streams music non-stop and keeps the pace upbeat. It creates a nice atmosphere in the office, so I reckon that is the best device we have.
What software keeps you most productive at work?
To be totally honest, I think that most software distracts people and stops them from being productive. Prioritising, self-discipline and being able to focus on one thing deeply is what makes people productive. So the software that usually supports this is often the quit shortcut on my laptop. If I had to be specific picking about a technology, then picking up the phone and making a phone call is still the best way to get anything done quickly and efficiently. We work across many different time zones and cultures and this can literally save days.
Is there any technology that has become extinct that you would like to resurrect?
I had these toys as a kid called “Micronaughts,” which were kind of high tech robot toys. They were only around for four years and then the company went bust. I wish they were still around today, as I know my kids would love them.
Is there any technology you would personally recommend that you don’t think enough people know about? (hardware or software, work or personal)
I’ve recently started reading Quora, a question and answer website, which is both diverting and fascinating. It features expert opinions from experts on anything and everything… For me it fills a gap that was sadly lacking in the online world.
Do you think anything about your personal use of tech would surprise your colleagues?
They’ve seen me do it so it wouldn’t surprise them, but I still prefer using a small notebook and a pen to take notes during meetings.
